Julia Clarke is one of Art Basket’s newest Artists and is a sculptor from the UK with a passion for working with nature’s more tactile materials, such as willow, cane and clay. She is passionate about creating beautiful and textural sculptures that are approachable and enhance the spaces around them.

We caught up with Julia to discuss her style, method, inspiration and some of her newest artwork.

How would you describe your artistic style?

Contemporary, with a real love of natural materials, line, and strong shape and form.

Could you give us a little insight into your sculpting process?

I usually draw or make maquettes out of clay or wire first. Sometimes an idea can come from a doodle, or a walk in the woods - the space between branches on a tree, or a yoga pose!

Then I get the materials ready- willow needs soaking and wrapping overnight so it is supple for weaving. I then make an outline first, then gradually build up the form weaving one piece at a time.

Do you draw inspiration from using particular materials in your sculptures?

Yes, I love to build up the form, movement, and texture with the woven willow.  I also enjoy creating something more solid but fragile with the clay and can combine the two things that are quite opposite. But to answer your question more simply, I think I am materials-led rather than process-led. I do not like using complicated processes (machinery, lots of power tools etc), it is all about my hands, touch, strength, and movement.

What inspires you the most about your pieces of art?

I love it when a piece looks right in a room or a garden… it adds something like nothing else can. .I hope to anchor the space and the energy in the space if you like.. everyone should have a piece of sculpture in their home or workspace. I think often people think they don’t have room, but it can add something that a plant or a picture cannot.

Who do you hope that your art appeals to the most?

I hope those that appreciate art and craft, and that would like to add something individual and well made to their surroundings.
